Sun 2pm-8pm
(Haji Lane is right next to Arab Street. Get off at Bugis MRT, walk pass Raffles Medical Hospital and Golden Landmark Hotel then cross the street in the direction of Arab Street. Haji Lane is the small street next to Arab Street that looks slightly dead at first glance because there isn't much traffic in there. But therein lies the beauty - you can walk on the tarmac! And there IS life in Haji Lane - go on, take a peek in the shops. You will be enthralled.)

Do check out the boutique in hip and happening Haji Lane where many entrepreneurial young people have set up shop, many of them selling fashion wear and accessories designed and made in Singapore by up and coming designers. You will be amazed at the treasure trove this renagade street has become. Fashion items here range from vintage and retro to avant garde, designer and edgy.

We simply love shopping in this stretch of colourful shophouses in Singapore where time seems to have stood still. It's just very quaint and Olde World. It's also refreshing that every shop has its own individual style and range of products, and isn't part of some fashion chain found everywhere else. It's great for people like us who're oh-so-bored with shopping in malls where the mix of shops is identical. I mean, what's the point of opening so many shopping centres when it's only the same big-name stores that can afford to pay those exorbitant rents..it only makes for boring shopping!

We certainly hope Haji Lane stays individual and unique for a long time to come and not get caught up in the wave of commercialism. Fingers crossed too that developers don't barge in and screw up the place with their spruce-up plans (worst still, en bloc sale of the shophouses!) that inevitably result in higher rents that up-and-coming designers can't afford.

Anyways, Saturday's a good time to visit when all the stores are definitely open and there's a nice manageable crowd that gives a buzz to this artsy-fartsy street without the place getting too maddening.

You MUST drop in at Suite Stuff (on the second floor a door or two from House of Japan on the ground floor) to chat with the owner, funky Stan, who's a musician and we hear she sings beautifully. Browse and buy her vintage dresses available in limited pieces for each design. Look, see and touch selected Fluff designs that are stocked at Suite Stuff and maybe buy a pair of earrings or two plus a dangly necklace.

Then have lychee martini or gula melaka gelato at Pluck ice cream parlour a few doors down the street. And if you're still feeling hungry, tuck into Middle-Eastern/Egyptian fare at Cafe Le Caire further down the street. The braised lamb is to-die-for. We also love the black coffee with mint. ;)
